I sei brani di "New Liberalistic Pleasures", album del 2006 degli italiani The Death of Anna Karina, sono un esempio di come la terraferma europea stia colmando la distanza con gli Usa nell'ambito della scena indie/hardcore. Quest'album ha un sacco di energia dentro di sé, ricorda gli iconici At The Drive In, senza il loro lato progressive e i loro oscuri testi, e mescola talvolta chitarre e ritmi hardcore con le semplici melodie di un synth a 8 bit. Tra una certa elettronica tenebrosa e una non usuale forma-canzone, scorgo una band post-hardcore, che cerca una via di uscita dagli stereotipi dell'hardcore, che pure utilizza per la maggior parte del tempo. Ma il suono generale dell'album è un pochettino monotono. Mi piacerebbe sentire tastiere più varie e qualche canzone a tempo medio, almeno una volta. Italian 6 piece The Death of Anna Karina's 2006 effort "New Liberalistic Pleasures" is an example of how mainland Europe is closing the gap between USA in the indie/hardcore scene. Reminiscent of the iconic At the Drive-In, without the progressive side and the obscure lyrics and on somesongs mixing guitarwork and hardcore rhythms with simple 8bit synth melodies, this album has lots of energy packed in it. The mixture of some gloomy electronics and unconventional song structures makes me see them as a post-hardcore band, trying to figure out a way to get out of the hardcore stereotype, they manage it most of the time, but the general sound of the album is a tad bit monotonous. I'd like to see them try more diverse stuff with the keyboards, and do some mid tempo songs once in a while. Out on Bologna's Unhip.
