A Life Designed for Fun

Lunedì 18 luglio 2022 è uscito per Z Tapes e La Barberia Records "A life designed for fun", il secondo EP tratto da "Pastimes", il nuovo album dei Baseball Gregg composto per la prima volta con la band al completo. Dall'arrivo di Sam in Italia a fine 2021 la formazione italo-californiana ha realizzato venti brani che verranno distribuiti nel corso di tre mesi in altrettante release discografiche per poi confluire in un Full Length la cui pubblicazione è prevista a settembre.

"A life designed for fun", a differenza del precedente EP "Parrots and the park", che vedeva atipiche sonorità primaverili, ci immerge nuovamente nella malinconia psichedelica che ci aveva fatto innamorare dei Baseball Gregg. Il titolo fa riferimento a un verso della focus track "Better days", terza traccia del disco che ci offre una punto di vista universale, dove umani, animali e piante hanno tutti la stessa importanza.

«The song Better Days came about as a true collaboration between Luca and me. Luca had written the melody and harmony of the riff, verses, and chorus, and also the words of the chorus: "30 years around the sun, I feel like I'm almost done." Then I had written the lyrics of the verses, and added the coda (somewhat inspired by the end of "God Only Knows" by the Beach Boys.) The lyrics are about the failure of selfishness, and about the fact that at the end you'll find tranquility in a universal point of view, in which humans have the same importance as animals and plants. It seems right to me that such a song did not come from a single brain, but from a collection of our creative instincts.» – Sam Regan

"Pastimes", il titolo dell'album completo in uscita a settembre, è una citazione del passo “Pastimes are past times” presente nel Finnegans Wake, e la figlia di Joyce è raffigurata nei quattro artwork che accompagnano i lavori. Sam Regan ha reintepretato le foto che Berenice Abbott scattò a Lucia Joyce (all’epoca una stella della danza, poco prima della triste fine in manicomio dove verrà rinchiusa fino alla fine dei suoi giorni) nella Parigi dei ruggenti anni Venti.
