No mindless executions. In Mr Hellsberg’s clan the rule is to assess your ability to think, with a little riddle, making you completely responsible for your own destiny.
You must understand, my dear Pascal, the importance to me of having men who are capable of thinking. Men who will make rational decisions whenever the necessity arises. Therefore…
Let’s call the three boxes A, B and C. In one box is a prize worthy of your capability for reasoning. Only I know which box that is. It’s a simple and harmless potion, a tonic. You will drink it and it will help lift your spirits. More importantly, you’ll still be alive. It will be your baptism into our clan. Money, privilege and power await you. On the contrary, if you choose one of the two wrong boxes there is a pill you will swallow that contains white arsenic. You’ll suffer two days of atrocious agony, and then you’ll die.
