DESCRIZIONE
Il titolo è una chiara citazione al poemetto modernista The Waste Land di T.S. Eliot di cui si cita anche il passo in cui il London Bridge è percorso da morti che camminano in stato di alienazione.
La progressiva disumanizzazione, androidizzazione (“counting electric sheeps” riferimento a P.K. Dick) dell’umano e un tentativo, sospeso (“I can’t believe…”), solo pensato, di poter tornare indietro.
Nella seconda parte si abbandona la speranza, dopo la progressiva accelerazione del tempo (anche musicale). Ci si trova così nella terra desolata (“in this waste land”) ridotti a connessioni artificiali (“shrinking in the wire”), senza speranza in religioni o politica (“gods”, “polls”), abitando antiche rovine di una gloriosa storia passata, le quali sono destinate a venir sommerse dall’innalzamento degli oceani (“...these ancient ruins are here for the fluids”), mentre i tecnici (“engineers”) ci distanziano dai sentimenti umani.
