Anche questo brano fu portato al successo da un cantante bambino: Jimmy Boyd, che nel 1952 aveva tredici anni (mentre Gayla Peevey, che l’anno successivo cantò “I want a hippopotamus for Christmas” ne aveva dieci).
Inizialmente la canzone fu osteggiata dalla Chiesa Cattolica di Boston, i cui vertici credettero di ravvisare nel testo un’allusione all’adulterio.
Tommy Connor dovette incontrare l’arcidiocesi per spiegare come il “Santa Claus” baciato dalla mamma del piccolo protagonista, fosse in realtà il di lui padre, e il di lei legittimo marito.
Tutto chiarito, dunque: la Chiesa poté rimuovere il bando e l’autore evitare l’accusa di scostumatezza.
