L’ansia di una madre può fare più danni dell’intento educativo che vorrebbe infondere. E può capitare che tratti i figli come gerani da innaffiare sul proprio davanzale, esibendo la loro bellezza e ostacolando le loro vocazioni, i loro desideri. È una forma di schiavitù e di proibizionismo, che non fa che alimentare la frustrazione dei figli, che vedono irrealizzati i propri sogni. “Mommy” parla di ambizioni e desideri, che vanno seguiti anche se si allontanano all’orizzonte e si è costretti a circumnavigare il mondo. E ritrovare se stessi di spalle al punto di partenza. Il concepimento di “Mommy” è avvenuto in seguito alla visione del video di “Before the water gets too high” dei Parquet Courts suonato al Rough Trade di New York City nel 2018. Come per “Diagram” anche la genesi di “Mommy” parte da un loop ritmico, stavolta isolato dai preset di una Korg Electribe Sampler. Il contrasto tra la base elettronica cupa e rimbombante e i toni eterei e scanzonati della musica e del testo rispecchia quello tra l’atteggiamento castrante di alcuni genitori e le aspirazioni dei figli.
